First Human Baby Born In Test Tube

The first human baby was born from an embryo that was screened for genetic defects has been successful, officials say.  This birth was a part of an experiment that scientists hope to perfect and further clinical testing will be needed before this process is regularly used. This concept known as next-generation genome screening and could revolutionize how we can manipulate human genes.

Experts say that this new low cost idea that spots chromosome gene defects. This can show what health defects in a specific embryo may have as it develops. Other screening methods have been developed in the past but this new method could deeply cut costs, according to Dagan Wells of the University of Oxford.

"We can do this at a cost which is about a half to two-thirds of what current chromosome screening costs are. If further randomized trials confirm this, we could reach a point where there is a very strong economic argument that this should be offered very wide." Clinical trials are set to begin later in 2013. Fox News Channel originally reported the story.
