Engineers and scientists are going to Houston, Texas this week to discuss future space travel. They have descended on this meeting to discuss the possibility of this project to ever happen. The conference which runs through Sunday is hosted by the 100 year spaceship initiative that was funded by the United States Space Department. They seek a development of a vehicle or spacecraft within the next 100 years that could travel to a neighboring star in a reasonable amount of time.

-Capturing Solar Energy that could be used on Earth?
This is an idea of pulling energy out of space and using on Earth is an idea to solve the world's future energy needs. A former NASA scientist, has created a project called " SPS-ALPHA" (Solar Power Satellite via Arbitrarily Large Phased Array). This idea would need to have thousands of intelligent computers working together in high orbit to capture and transmit the sun rays into energy and microwave beam that energy to Earth. This project could be ready by about 2030 if funding is there and everything else falls in place.

-Snake Robot wants to be sent to Mars by the European Space Agency.
A new type of robot, being developed by the SINTEF Research Institute in Norway are looking into launching a robotic snake type machine up to Mars to help study the red planet. They started the project back in June and plan to have the project done by December. A snake shaped robot could fit into places that have never been seen before because of its shape and could help the world learn even more about Mars. There are still many obstacles for this project to ever become a reality, but the European Space Agency is already planning to launch a project known as ExoMars between 2016-2018, so this project could happen sometime in the next five to tens years.

In the future, phones and even your household will hold the tools to help diagnose a problem or advise a person. These are the beginnings stages of this, as start up companies are leading the way toward smart technology medicine.

Voyager 1 and Lettuce Plants in Space?

Today's articles discuss how Voyager 1 has officially left our solar system and the possibility of growing food such as lettuce in space.

-Voyager I has left the solar system, NASA announces.
On September, 5th 1977 the Voyager 1 left the Earth. Thirty six years later, NASA officials have announced that the space probe has left our solar system. It has become the farthest man made object ever to fly in our universe. It is now more than 11 billion and half billion miles away from Earth. When would this space craft make it out of our solar system and actually reach another star? It would take more than 40,000 years for Voyager 1 to reach our nearest star. By 2025, Voyager 1 will most likely lose its nuclear fuel and its equipment will shut down. The major governmental space agencies and private industries need to continue to develop the capability of going faster in our solar system. Major ideas have been theorized and some projects are in the beginning stages of testing. Its going to take the funds, dedication, and ideas in order to get humanity into deep space sometime in the next century.

-NASA sending lettuce plants into space.

NASA scientists at the Kennedy Space Center are working on a microwave sized plant system that would allow for plants to grow in space. It is scheduled to go up into space during the SpaceX flight on December 9th, 2013. However, the astronauts will not eat this lettuce. They will let it grow, freeze it, and sending it back to Earth for further testing to make sure it is safe to eat in orbit. Other plants that NASA is looking at testing include radishes, bok choy, and zinnas. Plants that have roots such as carrots can't be grown in space, as of yet. Obviously, growing food in space would be a huge step towards exploring and colonizing in space. The effort and cost it would take to send food by ship would make it impossible to build a base on the moon or fly on a deep space mission to Mars.

NASA is set to launch Robonaut in their next mission to space using SpaceX spacecraft. It is set to launch sometime in late January 2014. Rob Ambrose who runs the project says that adding legs to this robot will help astronauts around the space station, to take over some tasks within the space craft. Robonaut will be required to do some daunting tasks that astronauts once had to do, but now Robonaut will be there to do it for them. Former astronaut Steve Hawley, a professor of astronomy at Harvard University says that in the future robots will take over tasks for humans that are dangerous or time consuming; ones that don't need human assistance. As robots get more advanced in their nature, they will continue to change society and they way humans live.

-Smartwatch is the next step in "Quantified Self" Life Logging.

Samsung's new Galaxy Gear smartwatch marks a new generation of wearable devices.
As written earlier, Samsung and Qualcomm finally unveiled its Smartwatch. Brad Feld, a venture capitalist from Boulder Colorado says that once these watches continued to get developed, they could bring new innovations. For example, since this watch touches a person's skin it could act like an organ and measure your temperature, pulse, or even record you quality of sleep. These type of devices could help humans more happy lives. This is the the idea of "quantified self". In the not so distant future, these smart devices could be like your own personal doctor recording data that could help a person live a more healthier life.

-Virgin Galactic SpaceShip Two completes second power flight.
Billionaire Richard Branson's commercial spacecraft had a successful space flight Thursday. It climbed over 40,000 feet in the air and will soon begin to fly commercially in the next year.  It will cost about $200,000 in order to fly on the plane. All of the objectives were successfully completed, says Virgin Galactic and it was a big step in the right direction for becoming a reality. More than 600 people have already signed up to fly on the space craft.

-NASA Launches Robotic Explorer to Moon.
NASA's latest unmanned robotic explorer successfully launched yesterday. Though it ran into equipment trouble, officials have said not to worry and it is set to get to the moon in about a month. It will study the Moon's atmosphere and the lunar dust that is on the Moon.

Will we ever... live on the Moon?

One of the biggest problems of creating a colony on the moon is how to create a water source. There have been many reports suggesting that there is some water near the poles of the Moon, but now that may not be the case, new research shows. Research suggests that there is still a possibility of ice mixed with dust on the poles, but ice on the Moon has yet to be confirmed. More testing and observation needs to happen before scientists have an idea if there are traces of water on the Moon. A source of some type water needs to be on the Moon in order for colonizing the Moon. Importing water would be a financial burden and there needs to be a way to get water out of the moon. Until then,  settling on the Moon may run into some roadblocks in the near future.

Unique Planet that Rains Glass and Launching Spacecraft from Virginia

As I wrote yesterday, astronomers often discover new planets outside of our solar system, hinting at what type of planets are out there in our large universe. Discovered in 2005, this blue world (HD189733b) that looks a marble is about 63 light years away from Earth. Does this planet have a chance to harbor life? This world is unfriendly to life because on this planet the atmosphere produces molten glass that rains down on the planet all the time. During the day time, this planet's temperature is at a comfy 1700 degrees Celsius. There is no chance of life ever developing or surviving there. The search continues for a plane that has the conditions to harbor life.

-NASA prepares for first Virginia Coast launch to the moon.

NASA is set to launch a spacecraft to the moon on September 6th. It will be the first time that NASA has ever developed a spacecraft from the state of Virginia. The Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment (LADEE)  is a robotic mission that will orbit the moon and gather information on the Moon's atmosphere and lunar dust. It will test the atmosphere of the moon and collect data for a 100 day period.  It will hopefully answer the question about lunar dust that had been electrically charged by sunlight. Was it responsible for the pre-sunrise glow above the lunar horizon detected during several Apollo missions? We will have to wait and see.

Alien Planets and iPhone Release Date?

Astronomers have been discovering other planets for the last 50 years. In the near future it is going to get easier and more efficient to look for alien planets thanks to new technology. For example, the French led Corot spacecraft has outlived its estimated lifespan and continues to study planets in our galaxy. NASA's current project that will look for alien planets and is known as TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite). It is expected to launch in 2017. By the early 2020s, E-ELT (European Extremely Large Telescope) will be implemented so astronomers can look for planets. In the future, NASA is going to send a telescope called the ATLAST (Advanced Technology Large Aperture Space Telescope) that is 2000 more light sensitive than NASA's Hubble. NASA is planning to launch this spacecraft between 2025 and 2035. Agencies that are looking for planets outside of our solar system are hoping one day find out if there is any type of life forms out there.

China plans to land an unmanned exploratory rover on the moon by the end of 2013. The launching rocket and other components for the Chang’e-3 lunar probe, named after a goddess in Chinese mythology who flew to the moon just a few years ago.

The United States is also sending a unmanned spacecraft to study lunar dust. That is expected to launch early next month.

A manned trip to Mars would require astronauts to stay in a small condensed space for six to nine months. Astronauts would need a food, sleeping areas, and exercise equipment (to counter bone loss, etc). One day that has been proposed is putting astronauts into a "deep sleep" and making them hibernate while flying to the red planet. Lowering an astronauts body temperature would make them unconscious, so they wouldn't take any type of medicine to make them sleep for a long period of time. The people working with this idea propose that this hibernating technology could be used by the mid 2030s, around the same time when NASA intends to send its first manned mission to Mars.

The Japanese car company Nissan announced that they are working on drive-less cars and hope to have their product on the market by 2020. In 2007 I pledged that --- by 2010 --- Nissan would mass market a zero-emission vehicle. Today, the Nissan Leaf is the best-selling electric vehicle in history. A private space plane took to the skies for the second time ever last Thursday. It passed a critical "captive carry" test that will help pave way for the new vehicle's fee flying debut this fall. The Dream Chaser space plane is  a plane that they hope can one day fly astronauts from Earth to the International Space Station. The Sierra Nevada Corporation is developing this space craft that they hope can one day make space traveling easier. This space craft is still in the development stage and testing will continue.

Fully autonomous cars will begin to appear on the market in the next 5 years, and the predicted growth is reportedly supposed to succeed 95 million in a little over 20 years. As shown above, this graph shows the projected sales of cars per regions in the world. David Alexander, senior research analyst at Navigant Research states, "Fully autonomous vehicles are unlikely to reach the market suddenly. Instead, progressively more capable systems that can assume control of certain aspects of driving will be introduced gradually. The first features will most likely be self-parking, traffic jam assistance, and freeway cruising -- well-defined situations that lend themselves to control by upgraded versions of today's on-board systems."

Space Warp Drive and New Imagery of a Possible Asteroid Mission

 A ring-shaped warp drive device could transport a football-shape starship (center) to effective speeds faster than light.

I've previously written on this subject, but NASA scientists are working with experiments that one day could give humans the ability to travel faster than the speed of light. A warp drive space craft would look like a football with two large rings. While basic tests have been worked with, there is no proof that a warp drive would actually be achieved. At the first ever Starship Congress, they theorized on what a warp drive spacecraft might do. The spacecraft would be propelled through space by stirring up the cosmic surroundings, causing quantum-level perturbations. The technology produces negative vacuum energy, a key ingredient for an exotic-matter-powered warp-drive engine. If this technology ever came about to its full potential, experts believe that a person could travel the ten times the speed of light. Will this ever be possible? Decades, maybe even centuries until we'll know the answer.

NASA and 11 other space agencies announced today that they are committed to cooperating in deep space exploration. NASA plans to build on its long experience of the Moon exploration to help private companies and other countries to eventually reach space. However, the main goal for space exploration is the continued "search for life is a central goal of space exploration."

-PS4 to be released on November 15th, Sony announces.


At the Gamescom conference in Germany, Sony unveiled it's long awaited release date for the next generation console, the Play Station 4. It is set to hit stores in North America on November 15th and in Europe on November 29th. During the holiday season, Sony plans to release the system in 32 countries. The PS4 will cost $399 and there have been already about 1,000,000 pre-orders for this product.  The PS4 comes with live streaming, recording, and of course gaming capabilities. There is also better graphics and even more space that developers can work with to achieve the best game possible.
Sony's console rival, Microsoft has yet to announce their actual release date but says it will come sometime in November 2013. That is the same month that Sony will release the PS4.

Another Successful SpaceX Test


 The video above shows another successful test for SpaceX. The test that was successful was known as the “divert test”. The rocket flew vertically 250 meters in the air. Then, the rocket moved laterally 100 meters, then moved back to the landing pad. The importance of a reusable rocket is so companies like SpaceX or government agencies like NASA don’t need to remake a rocket for every single mission. This will cut down costs when space travel will become more frequent in the near future.

A  company called Ubi Interactive is now selling software that can make anything from a wall to a desk a touchable touchscreen. Just hook up Microsoft's Kinect and a projector, then any display will become touchable.  Other technologies Microsoft is working on include an idea of projecting your smartphone on your hand. The smartphone projection would also have touch screen capabilities.  Microsoft's goal is to have these touchable screens everywhere in society -preferably by 2020.                           

-Artificial lead that can covert sunlight into energy?
The idea of converting sun energy into usable energy is closer to reality than one thinks. Harvard Professor Daniel Nocera  has developed an artificial leaf that replicates photosynthesis. Silicon water coats each side of the catalyst - one side produces oxygen and the other produces hydrogen. The challenge with this product  is overcoming the high engineering costs needed for light-harvesting infrastructure to make it commercially scalable. This small piece of technology has potential to solve our energy needs if it overcomes a few more obstacles.

What would a colony on Mars look like? This article goes into detail on what a colony would use in order to survive. Mars is cold and dry, but there a plenty of resources that could be used to build a colony on. For example, astronauts could get oxygen from Mars by pulling feedstock out of the thin carbon atmosphere to create oxygen and get water from the dirt under their boots. With Mars plentiful carbon dioxide levels and water would make it easy to grow crops and food on the planet.

Powering the red planet would be a more complicated process, says the officials at NASA. They say more efficient fuel cells may be the way to go. When a larger human society begins to thrive on Mars, geothermal power is also a possibility. Since it would be expensive to send expensive metals and minerals back to Earth, they would most only send information back by the means of intellectual property. There are several projects of starting a colony on Mars, which I've written about multiple times.

Samsung introduced its new 55-inch, curved television for $9000, which is about $6000 less cheaper than the similar model the company LG released early this year. One of the unique features of this system is called "Multiview," where two people could watch different shows on the television at the same time. The person would have to wear the special 3-D glasses in order to be able to hear what they are watching. This new television gives viewers a "captivating and vibrant picture that envelops viewers in spectacular color and beauty." Reviews of this new television have been very positive and some say it is the best television currently on the market.
